The U.S. Embassy in Colombo is inviting applications for the position of Senior Foreign Service National Investigator (FSNI) in the Regional Security Office (RSO). This is a senior-level permanent position open to current employees of the U.S. Mission. The successful candidate will lead the Foreign Service National Investigator team, coordinate with Sri Lankan law enforcement agencies, oversee complex investigations, and advise Embassy leadership on security matters.

Company Overview

The Regional Security Office works closely with local law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of U.S. personnel, facilities, and official visitors while supporting international security initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the Foreign Service National Investigator (FSNI) team.
• Serve as the Embassy’s primary liaison with Sri Lankan law enforcement and security agencies.
• Advise Embassy leadership on security issues and host government coordination.
• Coordinate security arrangements for visiting U.S. dignitaries and VIPs.
• Conduct and supervise complex criminal and security investigations.
• Coordinate investigative requests with U.S. law enforcement agencies.
• Support extradition cases and legal assistance requests.
• Assess threats affecting Embassy personnel and facilities.
• Prepare investigative reports and provide testimony when required.
• Support emergency preparedness and long-term security planning.
• Supervise staff, conduct performance evaluations, and provide training.
• Build and maintain professional relationships with government ministries, military, and police agencies.

Qualifications & Experience

Applicants must meet either of the following qualification pathways:

Option 1

• Bachelor’s Degree in Law Enforcement, Criminology, or equivalent.
• Minimum 5 years of professional investigative or special agent experience involving complex, high-profile investigations.
• Strong knowledge of investigative techniques, local legal procedures, and Sri Lankan law enforcement structures.

OR

Option 2

• Completion of two years of post-secondary education.
• Minimum 7 years of professional investigative or special agent experience involving complex investigations.
• Strong knowledge of local legal procedures and host-country security agencies.

Language Requirements

• Fluent in English (reading, writing, and speaking).
• Fluent in Sinhala or Tamil (reading, writing, and speaking).
• Translation ability may be required.
• Language proficiency may be tested during recruitment.

Required Knowledge & Skills

• Expertise in criminal investigations and investigative methodologies.
• Knowledge of Sri Lankan legal procedures and documentary records.
• Extensive understanding of law enforcement and security agencies.
• Excellent report writing and communication skills.
• Ability to supervise, mentor, and train staff.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• High level of integrity, discretion, and sound judgement.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
• Ability to analyse and present security data effectively.
