Department Overview

The Attorney General’s Department is Sri Lanka’s chief legal advisory institution representing the Government in legal proceedings, criminal prosecutions, constitutional matters, civil litigation, and public legal services. Junior Assistant State Counsel are responsible for supporting legal functions and representing the interests of the State in various judicial matters.

Educational & Professional Qualifications

Applicants must possess:

Mandatory Qualifications

• Have taken Oaths as an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka.
• Hold a valid Notary Licence issued under the Notaries Ordinance.

Additional Qualifications

The following will be considered advantages:

• Higher educational qualifications in Law (LL.B., Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s Degree, etc.).
• Relevant legal practice and professional experience.

Experience

• Experience in the legal profession will be treated as a special qualification during the recruitment process.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

• Be a Sri Lankan citizen.
• Be of excellent character.
• Produce a Character Certificate from an Attorney-at-Law with at least 20 years of service.
• Not have been convicted of any criminal offence.
• Be physically and mentally fit to serve anywhere in Sri Lanka.
• Meet all qualifications by 03 August 2026.

Age Limit

• Minimum Age: 22 years
• Maximum Age: 40 years

Salary & Benefits

• Salary Scale: AGS 1-2025
• Monthly Salary: Rs. 82,150 – 106,150
• Permanent and pensionable Government service.
• Three-year probation period.
• Entitled to Widows’ / Widowers’ and Orphans’ Pension Scheme contributions.
• Other Government benefits according to Public Service regulations.

Recruitment Process

Recruitment consists of two Structured Interviews.

Stage 1 – First Structured Interview

Assessment includes:

• Educational qualifications
• Professional qualifications
• Legal practice experience
• Communication skills
• Public speaking ability
• Court appearance skills
• Language proficiency
• Personality and leadership
• Knowledge of legal and judicial matters

Candidates scoring 50 marks or above will qualify for the Final Structured Interview.

Stage 2 – Final Structured Interview

Candidates will be evaluated on:

• Debating skills
• Ability to present legal facts
• Ability to answer questions effectively
• Basic theoretical knowledge of Law

Appointments will be made according to merit and the available vacancies.

• Certified copies of professional qualifications.
• Attorney-at-Law certificate.
• Valid Notary Licence.
• Character Certificates.
• Professional experience certificates where applicable.
