Artificer – Sri Lanka Navy

The Sri Lanka Navy invites applications from eligible male candidates for recruitment as Recruit Sailors in the Artificer Branch of the Sri Lanka Regular Naval Force.

The selected candidates will undergo a three-year full-time National Diploma in Technology programme through the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University or Sri Lanka Naval Institute of Technology.

Available Study Streams

Candidates may be enlisted for the following National Diploma in Technology programmes:

• National Diploma in Technology – Marine Engineering
• National Diploma in Technology – Automobile Engineering
• National Diploma in Technology – Electrical Engineering
• National Diploma in Technology – Electronic & Telecommunication Engineering
• National Diploma in Technology – Hull Repair & Ship Construction Engineering

General Eligibility

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

• Must be a Sri Lankan citizen.
• Must be male.
• Age between 18 and 24 years as at the closing date.
• Minimum height: 5 feet 5 inches (165.10 cm).
• BMI: 17–27.
• Minimum chest measurement: 32 inches (81.28 cm).
• Colour vision: STD II.
• Visual acuity: 6/6 without spectacles/lenses. Candidates with distant vision of 6/12 corrected to 6/6 with lenses may be considered.
• Must be unmarried. Recruits will not be permitted to marry during training.

Educational Qualifications

Applicants should:

• Have passed the G.C.E. O/L Examination with at least 6 subjects, including:
  • English
  • Science
  • Mother Tongue
• Have a Credit Pass in Mathematics within not more than two attempts.
• Have appeared for G.C.E. A/L in:
  • Physical Science Stream, or
  • Biological Science Stream, or
  • Obtained simple passes in Science for Technology and Engineering Technology under the Technology Stream.

Training & Service Conditions

Selected candidates will initially be enlisted as recruits and will undergo basic training.

During and after training:

• Recruits will be subject to Naval Law.
• Uniforms and other equipment will be provided.
• Accommodation and food will be provided during training.
• Sailors may be required to serve anywhere in Sri Lanka, at sea, or in a foreign country, depending on duties and training requirements.

Salary & Allowances

According to the notification:

• Basic Salary: Rs. 47,834
• Cost of Living Allowance: Rs. 17,800
• Uniform Cleaning Allowance: Rs. 350
• Hard Line Allowance: Applicable after basic training
• Special Allowance: Rs. 1,000
• Special Additional Allowance: Rs. 2,400
• Net Pay: Rs. 69,984
• Ration Allowance: Rs. 29,025 when applicable
• Approximate Gross Pay with Ration Allowance: Rs. 99,009

Other benefits include railway warrants, free medical facilities and applicable accommodation/house-rent benefits for married personnel.

Special Benefits for Artificer Sailors

The Navy follows a special promotion procedure for the Artificer Branch, under which Artificer sailors are eligible for promotions without being restricted by vacancies.

Retiring sailors who reach the rank of Technical Officer Class I or above will receive certification stating that they served as a Technical Officer.

Physical Endurance Test

Candidates who qualify at the selection interview will have to undergo a Physical Endurance Test.

For male candidates, the requirements include:

• 1600 m Run: 9 minutes
• Push-ups: 12 or more in 1 minute
• Sit-ups: 10 or more in 1 minute

Candidates who pass the Physical Endurance Test must then appear before a Navy Medical Board. Only candidates found medically eligible will be enlisted as Recruit Sailors in the Artificer Branch.

Documents Required

Candidates should be prepared to produce originals of relevant documents, including:

• Birth Certificate
• Educational qualification certificates
• School Leaving Certificate
• Grama Niladhari Certificate obtained within the last six months
• Professional/technical training or experience certificates, if applicable
• Three recent character certificates
• Certificates relating to sports and other activities
