Position Details

The Librarian will be responsible for providing leadership in Librarianship, Library and Information Sciences, research, academic development and dissemination of knowledge, while contributing to the development of the University and wider national development.

Qualifications & Experience

Applicants should satisfy the following requirements:

Academic Qualifications

Candidates should possess one of the following:

• A First or Second Class (Upper Division) in a Special Degree; or
• A Second Class (Lower Division) in a Special Degree or a First or Second Class (Upper Division) in a General Degree; or
• A pass in a Degree Examination together with a Postgraduate Degree of at least two academic years’ duration in Library and Information Sciences with a research component by way of thesis/dissertation.

In addition, candidates should possess:

• A Master’s Degree in Library & Information Science obtained after a full-time course of study of at least two academic years, or an equivalent part-time course, with a research component by way of thesis/dissertation; or a Doctoral Degree.
• Publications in the field of Library and Information Sciences.
• At least 15 years’ experience after obtaining a first degree, or at least 10 years’ experience after obtaining the qualification under item 2, in one or both of the following:
  • Librarianship in a recognized library
  • Research in Library and Information Sciences
• Candidates must obtain at least the minimum marks specified in the marking scheme for the post of Librarian.

Note: No credit will be given under the Master’s Degree requirement above to a postgraduate degree recognized under the qualification for appointment as Assistant Librarian.

Salary & Benefits

The advertised salary scale is:

Rs. 198,280 – 13 × Rs. 4,850 – Rs. 261,330 per month

In addition to the basic salary, the advertisement states the following allowances:

• Academic allowance: 124% and Rs. 13,300
• Research allowance: 21% of the basic salary, payable to academic staff based on research activity
• Cost of living allowance: Rs. 17,800 per month
